Best Dramatic TV Series

All television is, at its heart, dramatic. The most lighthearted comedy has a bit of pathos lurking beneath the surface, even if it's only Wiley Coyote's unrelenting hunger or the way that Oscar's messiness completely unravels Felix Unger's fastidious life.

These nominees are all dramas, and by taking on the label, they all seek to shed light on the human condition. But as dramas, they walk a series of fine lines with varying amounts of success.

Which ones are able to educate us without being preachy, entertain us without being dumb, and/or inspire us without crossing into heavy-handed melodrama?
